Digital Security

Learn about:

The importance of best practice within digital security is often overlooked. Whether it's because of the assumption that the risks don't apply to you personally, or that the effort outweighs the potential benefits, this is a huge error in thinking. Shortcomings in basic digital security can leave you vulnerable to malicious activity that can severely impact both your professional and personal life. In these lessons, we make the case that your own decisions and activities are directly tied to the safety of others around you, and that's reason enough to take it seriously. We explore how and why hacks occur, why the stakes are so high, and plenty of clear, sensible advice on how to defend against potential threats.

By the end of these 3 lessons you will understand:

  • Why each of us needs to take responsibility for digital security
  • What's at risk within a hack, and an impression of how & why these attacks occur
  • Why certain precautions must be followed, and which tech solutions are available to help

Lesson Overview

Lesson 1

An examination of a hack in action, to illustrate how quickly a breach can spread throughout a network and to give an impression of how high the stakes are.

In this lesson you will learn:

  • What's commonly at risk when a hacker infiltrates a network
  • How and why these hacks are likely to happen, and what motivates hackers
  • It's mainly people (rather than technology) that are exploited in security breaches

Lesson 2

A study of why, despite there being different ones for different purposes, all passwords need to be 'strong' passwords.

In this lesson you will learn:

  • Not all passwords are the same, and they can serve different purposes
  • How passwords are stored, and how they can become compromised
  • How 'strength' (complexity) dictates how quickly a password can be 'cracked'

Lesson 3

A walkthrough of some vital password precautions you should be following and an introduction to some tech solutions that can help you to improve your security.

In this lesson you will learn:

  • Some straightforward and important advice about password safety
  • That the most important action in digital security is notification
  • Which tech solutions are available to make your life easier and safer online
